• Onboard investigations of pirated commercial ships following their release, interviews of crewmembers, and interviews of incarcerated pirates, revealed a sometimes harrowing account of life aboard a pirated ship.  Nonetheless, these findings and lessons learned have now been distilled-and for the benefit of ship owners, vessel operators and company security officers-are available by e-mailing MARLO at MARLO.BAHRAIN@ME.NAVY.MIL or calling +973-1783-3925.

COUNTER-PIRACY GUIDANCE SUMMARY

• REVIEW FULL COUNTER-PIRACY GUIDANCE

For ships transiting high-risk piracy areas:

• Register with UKMTO at ukmto@eim.ae.
• Within the Gulf of Aden IRTC, register at MSCHOA at http://www.mschoa.org
• Contact MARLO to receive the Gulf of Aden Group Transits (GOA GT) times.
  • All ships are strongly urged to use the IRTC and follow the GOA GT if their speed is below 18 knots but greater than 10 knots.
  • Vessels faster than 18 knots should transit between 47ºE and 49 ºE during the hours of darkness.
  • Vessels less than 10 knots should contact MSCHOA for routing guidance.
• All vessels should establish contact with UKMTO, MSCHOA and MARLO for additional guidance.
