Combined Task Force 150
History:
Combined Task Force (CTF) 150 is an international task force that conducts Maritime Security Operations southeast of the Strait of Hormuz, in the Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. Since 2001, 24 nations have operated as part of this Coalition task force.
The mandate and mission of CTF 150 is derived from United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1368, 1373 and 1378 following the September 11th attacks of 2001.
The Task Force maintains a significant operational presence to deter and counter terrorist movements at sea. Coalition countries contribute naval forces to CTF 150 by supplying ships as part of the continual presence in this region. These ships support and operate as part of CTF 150 for variable lengths of time, depending on their national constraints.
Since its creation, CTF 150 has been commanded by Canada (1), UK (4), France (6), Pakistan (2), Germany (2), Spain (1), Denmark (1) and the Netherlands (1).
Currently, French Navy Rear Adm. Alain Hinden commands CTF 150.
Mission:
The primary objective of CTF 150 is to work with Coalition, regional and other partners to achieve astable and secure maritime environment free from terrorism and related activities.
To accomplish this overall mission, CTF 150 seeks to do the following:
- Counter or defeat acts of violent extremism, aggression, and associated terrorist networks in littoral and maritime area of responsibility.
- Monitor and counter terrorism-related activities such as drugs and arms smuggling, and human smuggling.
In addition, CTF 150 is ready to respond to a full range of crises, including environmental and humanitarian events.
Keys of success to fulfill the CTF 150 mission:
- Conduct Maritime Security Operations: TF 150 maintains a significant presence in the Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) and throughout its area of responsibility to deter and counter terrorism related activities, drugs and arms smuggling. The coalition helps keeping the SLOCs open and safe, ensuring freedom of navigation and other international rights and freedom on the high seas. CTF 150 operations complement the counter terrorism and security efforts of regional nations and seek to disrupt violent extremists’ use of the maritime environment.
- Theatre Security Cooperation (TSC): TSC is an activity that aims to help develop and encourage maritime security capacity and capability of regional nations and maritime forces. This is achieved through active dialogue and engagement with regional partners in the maritime environment. The desired end state is regional stability and security, with violent extremism defeated. Synchronized Maritime Security Operations will be employed throughout the AOR to counter and deter violent extremism in the maritime domain. TF 150 participates in TSC activities to increase the support and involvement in regional Maritime Security Operations.
- Partnerships with regional countries: The success of the TF 150 mission cannot be achieved without the help and support of regional nations. These links are established and developed with a common objective: to increase security and stability within the regional maritime environment. Regional nations' partnerships are key to achieving this objective.
