NAVCENT FCPOA Recognizes Junior Sailors
By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Ashanté Hammons, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command Public Affairs
NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY, Bahrain – U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) selected the first recipient of a Book Scholarship, Nov. 1.
The Book Scholarship is a drawing for $100 that is designated towards textbooks for any Second Class Petty Officers or below stationed at NAVCENT and currently enrolled and registered in college classes.
FCPOA member Information Systems Technician Petty Officer First Class Kelly Johnson organized the idea for the scholarship at NAVCENT. Johnson said the scholarship is a great opportunity to recognize hard-charging Sailors working towards higher education.
“The book scholarship is to offset the cost of college textbooks,” said Johnson. “It can cost a Sailor very little to nothing to go to college. Tuition assistance pays for the classes and the scholarship helps pays for books.”
Logistics Specialist Second Class Gregory Banks, who is studying healthcare management at Southern Illinois University, received the $100 scholarship.
“I was very shocked when my name was drawn,” said Banks. “I would like to thank the first classes for the recognition of the junior petty officers. It is very much appreciated.”
Book Scholarship opportunities will be held every other month with the next drawing coming in December.
NAVCENT is responsible for approximately 2.5 million square miles of area including the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, parts of the Indian Ocean and 20 countries.
