Singapore Led Flagship Intercepts Somali Pirates in Gulf of Aden

MANAMA, Bahrain – The U.S. destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99) flagship of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, intercepted suspected pirates in the Gulf of Aden, whilst undertaking tasking as part of Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). The Thailand-flagged bulk carrier MV Thor Traveller came under attack in the early morning of April 15, 240 km east of Aden by a skiff with seven suspected pirates on board. During the attack, the suspected pirates fired rifles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) at the vessel for ten minutes in an attempt to force her to stop. moreBookmark and Share

Manama, Bahrain – An attempted piracy attack in the Gulf of Aden was successfully thwarted by multi-national forces yesterday. The Danish flagged tanker MV Torm Ragnhild came under attack along the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) by pirates in 2 skiffs firing rifles and RPGs. The ship immediately radioed for help and sent a distress signal to maritime organizations to alert them of the attack. US Navy Ends Search For Missing Aviator

UK Flagged Vessel Evades Pirate Attack

MANAMA, Bahrain – A UK flagged merchant vessel, the MV Tortugas has successfully evaded a pirate attack by following industry recommended ‘best management practices’. The vessel was attacked on March 15 by two pirate skiffs, 135nm North West of Madagascar. Rocket-propelled grenades and small arms were fired by the pirates and the bridge window and ventilation system on the MV Tortugas were damaged. Divers And EOD Assist In Salvage Operation

USNS GRAPPLE, Mediterranean Sea - U.S. Navy Sailors and civilian mariners attached to USNS Grapple (T-ARS 53) aided in the recovery of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409, which crashed off the coast of Beirut, Lebanon on Jan. 25. Grapple received the call to assist in the salvage of the aircraft and immediately got underway from Tunis, Tunisia. Coalition Counter Piracy Task Force Changes Command

MANAMA, Bahrain – Singaporean Navy Rear Adm. Bernard Miranda assumed command of the Coalition counter-piracy unit, Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, in a ceremony aboard the destroyer USS Hopper (DDG 70) while pier-side in Bahrain today. Rear Adm. Miranda relieved US Navy Rear Adm. Scott E. Sanders, who has commanded the counter piracy task force since August 13, 2009. Rear Adm.
